In the last few years, an increasing number of libraries have taken advantage of RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification technology to automate operations & build self-service capability. This trend is now spreading across the globe, with establishments in North America, Europe and Asia leading the way.

Solution brief: Library Automation

RFID Readers India

For a sophisticated technology, RFID is simple to install and easy to understand. A self-service kiosk (with RFID reader) automates check-out process by reading the tagged books & links with the borrower’s account (smart card). In addition, an automated drop box enhances sorting and inventory processes. RFID also improves security by making use of the EAS (electronic article surveillance) function available in most RFID tags to discourage un-authorized access or removal. Inventory checks & audits are conducted using a handheld RFID reader & generate exception reports. What this all means in practice is that library staff have more time for core library development & providing assistance to patrons.
